In 1983, psychologist John Anderson wrote a computer program to test his theory of how people solve math problems. The program was designed to compare the steps subjects take in solving a problem with those predicted by a theoretical model. It also gave students--typically in high school--feedback to get back on track if they were having trouble. Anderson, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University
