1voteWelcome! We hope you'll find The Democracy Project site to be a useful, fun addition to your classroom during the election year and beyond. The activities and lesson plans you see on the site have been designed with the following goals in mind: * introducing the structure and duties of local, state and federal government; * understanding how government affects our everyday lives, through laws, institutions and services provided in the community; * identifying the duties of the U.S. president and thinking critically about the skills necessary to be a good president; * understanding the history of voting rights in America, and articulating how voting and other forms of civic involvement are essential to a healthy democracy. The online activities are designed for students in grades three to six, with accompanying lesson plans for language arts (LA), social studies (SS), and math (M) teachers. Below you will find more information about the educational goals for each online activity; lesson plans for each activity; curriculum standards related to this content; and the teachers who wrote the lesson plans.

1voteTHE ON-AGAIN, off-again debate on immigration reform threatens to overshadow almost every other key legislative challenge in Washington, D.C. -- including just how involved the federal government should be in our schools. Few Americans are aware that the most important piece of education legislation in decades -- the federal No Child Left Behind law, which went into effect in 2002 -- is up for "reauthorization" this year.

1voteIT'S NO SURPRISE to see presidential candidates pandering to contributors. But what is disappointing is how far some of them will go to take care of those who take care of them. Imagine being so eager to please the money crowd that you'll try to destroy a reform measure that is reasonable and helpful, especially when the help is going to the same folks you claim to represent.

1voteCable in the Classroom uses Macromedia Director and Flash to deliver a politically-charged board game which educates people on the process of a presidential race by letting them run their own campaign.
